Most Common Types of double glazing windows available:

Bay Windows:

Bay windows are the combination of three or more windows that angle out beyond the exterior wall but are normally built to be from the ground up. They can even be installed as four projection angles to include up to a 90 degree box bay. As the bay window protrudes outside the exterior wall, you will be able to enjoy an extended view and even additional space for maybe extra seating, table or a TV.

Bow Windows:

Just like bay windows, bow windows extend beyond the exterior wall, but are not built from the ground up. Bow windows sweep away from the wall in an arch shape of 3 or more windows.  Bow windows are typically larger than the bay window style and has more glass area because of a curve without corners. As with bay windows, you could add a window seat to your bow window depending on the height of your bow window. If you are adding a bench seat below your window, it’s wise to consider building in extra storage.

What styles of Bay and Bow Windows are available?

There are 4 types of bay and bow windows.

Bay and Bow windows have been around for hundreds of years and in that time they haven’t really changed. You could incorporate different styles of windows, you could change an angle and add a few extra superficial details. This would provide you with a wide variety of design options to fit your preferences. Even with all that design flexibility, there are really only four different types of bay windows:

1. Original Canted Bay and Bow Windows

Original Canted bay windows have the classic shape you would expect to see in a bay window. They have a flat front with angled sides and are only found on the first level of homes and buildings.

2. Box Bay and Bow Windows

Box bay windows are structurally the same as canted windows. The difference is that the flanking windows on the side meet the front window at a 90 degree angle, creating the shape of a box.

3. Oriel Windows

Oriel bay windows are the oldest form of bay windows, first popularized on mansions during the English Renaissance. They are built into the side of a home, never touching the ground, so they can be found on any story of a home or building. To provide structural support to an oriel window, there’s usually a decorative bracket or corbel of wood, stone, or masonry underneath the windows.

4. Circular Bay and Bow Windows

Circular bay windows are less common but they are distinct enough to have their own category. They are defined by larger panes of glass on the three sides of the bay and additional panes above the windows. Circle bay windows typically feature the most intricate moldings and ornamental details of any type of bay window.

Casement Windows.

The Casement is the part of the window that opens. Casement windows are a type of window that is attached to the window frame which opens and has hinges attach at the top, bottom or to the side. Casement windows are probably the most popular type of window in the UK and have been in production for a long time. The reason casement windows are one of the most popular types of windows is because they are very reliable, durable and energy efficient. They also benefit from being very customisable and will suit of variety of styles and budgets.

Sash Windows.

Sash windows don’t open on a hinge. They are vertically opening windows generally associated with traditional and older properties.

A sash window consists of two framed windows  – one is positioned in front of the other. This is more generally referred to as a sliding sash window. These windows units sit in frames with vertical grooves that allow them to move up and down smoothly without any danger of one frame rubbing against the other and damaging it. The up and down movement of the sashed is assisted by counterbalances – weights on cords and pulleys. These counter balances can be hidden within the frame or exposed on the inside of the window.

Georgian Windows.

Georgian Windows are recognised by their distinctive grid of bars. This feature actually only exists today because glaziers historically could not make large panes of glass, so had to make small panes and tie them together with vertical and horizontal bars. Originally Georgian Window frames and bars were made from timber but today they are available in UPVC, Aluminium and traditional timber.

Due to their vast heritage, Georgian Windows are recognised as elegant and sophisticated and are still very popular today. They work well on older building or can give a contrasting look on modern properties.

Dormer Windows.

A dormer window is a window that projects vertically from a sloped roof, rather than being set into the roof directly. It is commonly used to bring light into attics, generally upon finishing the attic as a living space.

Guildford Information.

Guildford is a town in west Surrey, England, around 27 mi (43 km) south-west of central London. As of the 2011 census, the town has a population of about 77,000 and is the seat of the wider Borough of Guildford, which had around 143,929 inhabitants in mid-2019. The name “Guildford” is thought to derive from a crossing of the River Wey, a tributary of the River Thames that flows through the town centre.

Modern Guildford.

In the 21st century Guildford still has a High Street paved with granite setts and is one of the most expensive places to buy property in the UK outside London. The town has a general street market held on Fridays and Saturdays. A farmers’ market is usually held on the first Tuesday of each month. There is a Tourist Information Office, guided walks and various hotels including the historic Angel Hotel which long served as a coaching stop on the main London to Portsmouth stagecoach route.

Guildford Transport.

The Guildford train station lies northwest of the town centre. South Western Railway, which runs the majority of the services, is in charge of it. They travel via Clapham Junction to London Waterloo, Godalming and Haslemere to Portsmouth Harbour, and Farnham to Alton. The Great Western Railway travels via Redhill to Gatwick Airport and via Wokingham to Reading.

All services are operated by South Western Railway out of London Road (Guildford) station, which is situated northeast of the town centre. Trains travel via Oxshott or Epsom to London Waterloo.
